The health program is based on the concept of promoting optimum health care for all students and school personnel. It includes maintenance of a safe, sanitary, and healthy school environment.
Health services provide students with counseling and guidance concerning individual health needs, promote good health habits, aid in the control of contagious diseases through re-admissions, exclusions and immunizations, care for injured persons or those who become ill at school, maintain necessary health records, and serve as a resource for health instruction.
Health Services Include:
Students will not be admitted to school without adequate immunizations against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), polio, diphtheria, whooping cough, and tetanus. Kindergarten students must show a birth certificate and written documentation of a Mantoux tuberculosis test dated not more than one year prior to admission.
Prescribed Medication for Pupils
Any student who is required to take medication prescribed by a physician during the school day must be helped in doing so by the school nurse or another authorized school employee; the Ed code, State law andthe school requires:
Special Pupil Medication
The parent or guardian of any pupil who is on a continuing medication program is required by law to tell the school about the medication being taken, the amount taken and the name of the supervising physician. With the parents or guardians consent, the school nurse may then talk with the students doctor and inform other school staff members about possible effects of the medication on the students behavior.
Smoke Free Environment
In the interest of public health, all schools within the Palmdale School District prohibit the use of any and all tobacco products on the school grounds.
The Palmdale School District does not provide medical or dental insurance to pupils injured on school premises or during school activities. The Board of Trustees has arranged a program for student accident and life insurance with Pacific Educators, Inc. Two plan choices are avaiable:
The student insurance program is optional; however, it is authorized by the State Education Code, which permits distribution of necessary information from the company providing the coverage. Parents can request information regarding the student insurance program. Brochures and enrollment information will be acquired.
