"AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society."

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is taken from the Latin, avid, meaning eager. It is a program designed to give students in the middle the skills they need to succeed in college. To be eligible for AVID a student must have scored basic or above in both Language Arts and Math on their state tests, must have a 2.3 to 3.5 grade point average, and, above all, must be willing to work very hard.

At Desert Willow all students learn the AVID strategies of Cornell note taking, maintaining an organized binder, and using their planner to help with time management. Students in the AVID elective have college tutors who, twice a week, work with small groups of students to improve their understanding of their various subjects. The other days of the week they spend on improving reading, writing, higher level thinking skills, and collaboration. Once a month there are guest speakers discussing their career and their college experience. AVID students are required to take at least two college field trips a year.

The AVID program elective is by application only. Students must submit an application and participate in an interview conducted by members of the AVID site team. Applications are available in March from 6th grade teachers, 7th grade Language Arts teachers, and in the office at Desert Willow.
