Barbara Gaines, Principal
Welcome to the 2012-13 school year! Our focus at Shadow Hills is to provide each child with a rigorous curriculum by providing numerous avenues of support so that each student at Shadow Hills can be a successful learner. We promote student learning by engaging our students with challenging lessons and opportunities to think critically. Each student will be held to high expectations, holding them accountable, for their learning. With your support, we will provide them a successful transition from elementary to high school.
I am thrilled to announce that Shadow Hills is certified as a National AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) school. This year we will offer three sections of
The staff members at Shadow Hills are professionals who place a high priority on educating the students we serve. The education of each student is the joint responsibility of the student, parents, teachers and administrators. To support this effort, we are providing each student with a school planner. The first planner is given free. Replacement planners will cost the student $5.00 and may be purchased in the office as long as supplies last. Each student is expected to carry the planner daily. It is also the student’s responsibility to have parents sign their planner every Thursday evening as planner checks will be done on Friday mornings in their first period class. Parents may also write notes to the teacher in the planner. I encourage you to look at your child’s planner daily. A blank planner indicates that your child is failing to write daily assignments. This is a concern that requires your immediate attention.
Shadow Hills has a uniform policy which I strongly urge you to support. The Uniform Policy will help us maintain a safe and orderly school environment, eliminate unnecessary distractions on campus, and identify our students coming to and from school. A copy of the Uniform Policy is also in this Planner. Appropriate dress and grooming contribute to a productive learning environment.
Great attendance and academic success go hand-in-hand. Unless your child is truly ill, please make sure they are at school, on time, every day. Shadow Hills takes pride in the fact that we have the best attendance among middle schools in the district. This is an accomplishment we want to continue. Each day that a student is absent or arrives late to school they miss out on some valuable lessons. Often times, it is difficult for struggling students to make-up these lessons. Please make sure they are here every day, on time, and ready to learn with the necessary tools to be successful in the classroom.
Parent involvement plays a key role in the success of your child. As a student experiences success, he/she is more likely to be engaged and motivated to continue learning. We invite you to be a team member in the effort of educating your child by attending Back to School Night, AVID Parent Meetings, Title I Parent Information Night and Parent Conferences. We urge you to be an active member in our PTSA, ELAC (English Language Advisory Council) Committee and the SSC (School Site council). All three of these committees need your active participation. Every month, I host a Friday morning Parent Roundtable to discuss current issues at Shadow Hills. This forum provides you and me the opportunity to address the needs of the Intermediate school student and how we, as a team, can improve student achievement at Shadow Hills. Babysitting and light refreshments will be provided at these meetings. I welcome any suggestions that you feel may assist us in improving the learning environment at Shadow Hills and look forward to meeting you!
