English Learner Programs

Plazas Comunitarias is a project that is implemented in collaboration with LACOE, the Mexican Consulate and the Department of Education in Mexico to provide adults the opportunity to continue and/or further their education. Participants can improve their home language (Spanish), accelerate the acquisition of English, support their children, improve their computational skills, improve their self-esteem and obtain official educational certificates from Mexico in elementary, middle, and high school. The Plaza is operated at Pueblo Learning Center and coordinated by Mariana Camarena. Volunteers serve as tutors for the adult learners. All materials, including books, cassettes, videos, CDs, and access to the CONEVyT portal/web site are provided by the Mexican Consulate.

Background -What is a Plaza Comunitaria?

It is a designed place that integrates educational resources and educational actions for lifelong learning and work skills. It is addressed mainly for youth and adults who are supported by one or more tutors who help them learning how to use the educational resources (videos, computers, educational Portal, satellite television, online courses, digital library, internet access), among others.

In this place Hispanic youth and adults as well as their families living in the United States have access to educational and work training opportunities at three levels of education. Most services within the Plaza Comunitaria are free of charge.

Plaza Comunitaria in the Palmdale School District

The Plaza Comunitaria in the PSD operates at the Pueblo Learning Center and offers courses in literacy, elementary, middle school and high school. These courses are in Spanish and give students an opportunity to complete their education, facilitate access to the GED test and facilitate the learning of English. Students advance through the courses at their own pace after they receive a diagnostic evaluation. Two tutors are available Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Those interested should call the Migrant Education office at 661-456-3079.
